Liminal Space of Cycling

Another idea I'm fascinated with in the world of bicycles is the liminal role of the cyclist. Technically if one is riding a bike they are considered a vehicle and must obey all traffic laws like a motorized vehicle. But there are many liberties to a bicycle that make it far different from a motorized vehicle. Thus one who rides a bike is both a vehicle and a pedestrian at the same time. There is a hybridity to the role of a cyclist. This video tries to illustrate this idea of trying to find you're own space within the world of transportation. For although one is considered both a pedestrian and a vehicle, he or she is unwanted by both. Cars are annoyed at the slow paced of a bicycle that impedes on their space/lane for driving. They would prefer the bike to be on the sidewalk, where they think it belongs. A pedestrian prefers does not want bicycles in their space of the sidewalk, however. Thus cyclist are left to the small shoulders and the gutter.
